Internship/REU panel and poster session

Please join us on Thursday, Nov 15 at 4 pm in 170 Hope St, Room 108 for a panel discussion on summer internship and research opportunities for undergraduates, which will be followed by an undergraduate poster session at 5 - 6 pm in 170 Hope, 1st and 2nd floors. Hear students from across STEM departments talk about their research and internship experiences, from CS, Computational Bio, Neuroscience, Math, APMA, and beyond! Refreshments will be served.

The Brown Society for Industrial & Applied Mathematics (SIAM) student chapter will host an industry and internship panel for gradute students. Students who have internship and/or industry experience will share their experiences and answer your questions. Join us to learn about the application process and job experience! Lunch will be served.

End-of-Year Celebration

The Brown Society for Industrial & Applied Mathematics (SIAM) student chapter will host a year-end celebration. Come celebrate another successful year of SIAM! Students, postdocs, faculty, staff, and visitors are invited to join us to hear about ways to get involved in SIAM next year, discuss ideas for next year's events, learn about officer positions and elections for new SIAM Chapter officers meet students from other STEM disciplines, and celebrate the third year of SIAM at Brown! Delicious treats and refreshments will be served!

Postdocs in APMA and Graduating PhDs in math and applied math will share their experiences with applying to postdocs, fellowships, and tenure track positions, and answer your questions. Hear about the application process and celebrate new APMA/Math PhDs! Lunch will be provided.

Math Slam!

4:00 - 5:30 pm on Thursday, April 12 in 170 Hope St, Room 108

Dessert will be served at 4 pm, followed by a collection of fun, fast-paced math talks from 4:30 to 5:30 pm. These talks will provide a preview of research in the Division of Applied Mathematics and the Mathematics Department. Undergraduate and graduate students are especially encouraged to come get ideas for summer research or thesis projects! (Co-hosted with AWM, AMDUG, & APMA)

Math in Industry Luncheon

12:00 - 1:00 PM on Wednesday, December 6 in 170 Hope St, Room 108

SIAM invites you to join our first Math in Industry Luncheon event with guest speaker Loren Shure from Mathworks. Loren has worked at MathWorks for over 30 years. For the first 27 of these years, Loren co-authored several MathWorks products in addition to adding core functionality to MATLAB, including major contributions to the design of the MATLAB language. She is currently part of the Application Engineering team, enabling Loren to spend more time and energy working with customers.

She graduated from MIT with a B.Sc. in physics and has a Ph.D. in marine geophysics from the University of California, San Diego, Scripps Institution of Oceanography. She is a Senior Member of IEEE. Loren writes about MATLAB on her blog, The Art of MATLAB.

SIAM will provide lunch to participants at 11:45, and the talk will begin around 12:15 pm.

REU Panel and Poster Fair

4:00 - 6:00 PM on Tuesday, November 7 in 170 Hope St, Room 108

The Brown Student Chapters of SIAM and AWM will host a combined Panel and Poster Fair event on Tuesday, November 7 at 4-6 pm. The panel discussion will focus on summer research and internship opportunities for undergraduates in math-related fields. After the panel, the poster session will take place from 5-6 pm. We are currently accepting abstract submissions from students who would like to present their research at the poster fair. Some funding is available for poster printing, and a "Best Poster" prize will be awarded. For more details, as well as the poster abstracts and presenters, please see the detailed program.
