Undergraduate Award Descriptions and Recipients

 

Rohn Truell Premium Prize
Daniel Gitelman and Do Young Yoon

The Rohn Truell Premium Prize was established in 1968 by friends of Rohn Truell, a former professor and chair of the Division. It is awarded annually to recognize a member (or members) of the graduating class concentrating in applied mathematics who has achieved special distinction during their studies at Brown.

Jerome L Stein Memorial Award for Undergraduate Excellence
Koushiki Bose

The Jerome L. Stein Memorial Award was established in 2013 to honor the memory of Jerome L. Stein, a former professor in the Division of Applied Mathematics and Economics Department.  It seeks to recognize concentrator who show outstanding potential in an interdisciplinary area that involves applied mathematics.

Distinguished Senior Thesis Award

John Thickstun, Sc.B., in Applied Mathematics, received the Distinguished Senior Thesis Award, for his work entitled, "Statistical Inference on Music with Applications to the Transcription Problem."   Professor Eugene Charniak acted as his thesis advisor. 

Senior Orator 

Tanayott Thaweethai, an applied mathematics and biology concentrator was chosen as one of this year's senior orators for Commencement.  For the full story, click here.

 

Graduate Award Descriptions and Recipients

The Dunmu Ji Award
Yang Yang

Dunmu Ji, who received his Ph.D. from the Division in 1988 was specially supportive of the graduate program as an alumni. The prize carrying his name is awarded in recognition of a particularly original and independent thesis.

The Stella Dafermos Award
Kelly McQuighan

The Stella Dafermos Award has been set up by the Division to honor the memory of Professor Stella Dafermos. The prize goes to one or more outstanding graduate students who share her goals.

The David Gottlieb Memorial Award
Yufei Liu

The David Gottlieb Memorial Award has been established by the Division to honor the memory of Professor David Gottlieb. The prize recognizes excellence of graduate study in the Division.

Sigma Xi Award
Jeffrey Miller

The Sigma Xi Award is awarded to a graduate student for excellence in reserach and high potential for future contributions

Simon Ostrach Fellowship
Yang Yang and Yue Yu

The Simon Ostrach Fellowship, our only named graduate fellowship, was established in 1994 by Simon Ostrach (Sc.M. 1949 and Ph.D. 1950) to recognize graduate students for their distinguished academic record.
