Mark Ainsworth named SIAM Fellow
Mark Ainsworth, professor of applied mathematics, has been named a 2014 fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. He joins 31 other scholars from all over the world in this year’s class. Ainsworth, who joined the Brown faculty in 2012, studies computer simulation— specifically how to interpret simulation results and quantify the margins of error inherent in them. His work has been used in a range of applications ranging from the development of optoelectronic devices to certification of pipelines for the North Sea oil industry. Before coming to Brown, Ainsworth was the 1825 Chair in Mathematics at Strathclyde University in Scotland. He was previously elected to a fellow of the Institute of Mathematics and Its Applications and the Royal Society of Edinburgh (Scottish National Academy of Science and Letters). In awarding his fellowship, SIAM cited Ainsworth’s “contributions to numerical analysis and scientific computing including finite element methods, adaptive methods, reliability, and a posteriori error estimation.
