Methods of Applied Mathematics-I (APMA 0350), Fall 2008
About this class
APMA 0350 is the first part of the APMA 0350-0360 sequence in mathematical
methods. This sequence focuses on linear ordinary differential
equations with some mention of nonlinear equations and an
introduction to partial differential equations. This class is mainly
a `methods' class, covering many of the same topics as in APMA
0330-0340. However, the material is treated in greater depth in this
sequence. This is one of the foundational sequences for the applied
mathematics concentrations at Brown and is also suited to students of
economics and the sciences planning to take classes in advanced
mathematics. MATH 0180 is a co-requisite (preferably a
prerequisite). We will also use some linear algebra in this class, and
it is highly recommended that students take MATH 0520 or 0540 if they
have not done so already.

Teaching assistants
The teaaching assistants for this class are Michael Lamar and James
Noble. Both are graduate students in applied math. You may contact
them via email at mlamar@dam.brown.edu and
noble@dam.brown.edu.
Each TA will hold one weekly recitation, two hours of office
hours, and grade homework. Recitations will be held in Smith-Buananno
Hall (in the Pembroke campus, Meeting St) as follows:
- Lamar: Wed, 4-4:50 pm, SmithB 201.
- Noble: Thu, 4-4:50 pm, SmithB G12.
TA office hours will be held as follows:
- Lamar: Mon 2-3pm, Wed 3-4pm, Sidney Frank Hall Research Tower,
Rm 462.
- Noble: Thu 2-4pm, Basement of 37 Manning St.
Exams, Homework and Grades
There will be two in-class exams and one final exam. Each in-class
exam is worth 20% of your grade, and the final is worth 40%. The
dates for these exams are as follows:
1st exam: Friday, October 3, in class.
2nd exam: Friday, November 7 , in class.
Final exam: December 13, 2-4pm.
The remaining 20% of your grade is based on weekly homework
assignments. Homework will be emailed to the class every Friday, and will
be due the following Friday.
Substitutes
I will miss lectures on some days (Oct. 22 and 24, possibly others) because of
research commitments. The class will be taught by stand-in lecturers
on these dates. They will be using my notes, so please attend class as
usual.
