Abstract:
Polynomial Chaos encounters difficulties when applied to time-dependent problems. In some cases the method breaks downs eventually or the number of degrees of freedom required becomes prohibitively large. This happens even in the simplest problems. This phenomenon will be explained. In this talk two extremely simple test problems will be addressed: the Decay equation and the harmonic oscillator. In both cases it is possible to capture the mean and the variance within the accuracy of the time integration method with only one degree of freedom.
