Bjorn Sandstede is a Professor of Applied Mathematics at Brown University, a Royce Family Professor of Teaching Excellence, and the Director of Brown's Data Science Initiative. His research focuses on applied dynamical systems, data science, and applications to biological systems. Before moving to Brown, he held faculty positions at The Ohio State University and the University of Surrey. Sandstede received an Alfred P Sloan Research Fellowship, the SIAM JD Crawford Prize, a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award, the Elsevier Jack Hale Award, and Brown's Philip Bray Award for Teaching Excellence. He was selected as a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. At Brown, Sandstede served for six years as department chair.

Sandstede received his undergraduate degree from the University of Heidelberg and his PhD from the University in Stuttgart. Before coming to Brown in 2008, he worked at The Ohio State University and the University of Surrey in England. Sandstede received an Alfred P Sloan Research Fellowship, the SIAM JD Crawford Prize, a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award, and the Elsevier Jack Hale Award, and he was selected as a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. Sandstede is also the recipient of Brown's Philip Bray Award for Teaching Excellence and the Graduate School Faculty Award for Advising and Mentoring.

At Brown, Sandstede served as department chair and as vice chair of the Research Advisory Board, and on the Tenure, Promotions, and Appointments Committee and the Advisory Board of the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning. He is one of the founding principal investigators of the NSF grant that established Brown's Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM).
