Midcourse correction in progress!

The more I worked on later parts of this, the more I saw the need to rewrite earlier ones. The plan was to add an introductory section, then to revise the existing ones and to add a few new ones. At present, sections that have no links are still promises, sections above the horizontal lines are pretty stable, and sections below will be moved upward as soon as I get around to revising them.
