Abstract: We shall examine the extent to which reasoning about mathematics can be done intuitively (hint: quite limited, due to the evolution of the human species). We shall demonstrate how such reasoning affects the applications of mathematics.

Title: Analysis and Control of Coupled Slow and Fast Dynamics
Abstract: Coupled slow and fast dynamics are in abundance in nature and in engineering. A mathematical model that depicts such phenomena is singular perturbations. I shall survey two decades of research into this area, research that focuses on systems where the fast dynamics may not converge to equilibria. The modeling, analysis and computational aspects of the model will be discussed.
